Working with a variety of mediums, I create layers with text and illustrations. Many of the pieces I create have been in response to something happening globally or nationally. Whether it is a tragedy or something good, I draw inspiration from these events and bring that into my work.
I use vintage books or text pieces that I have found while scouring through bookshelves in antique or thrift stores. When finding something that inspires me, I want to give it new life and put it back out into the world again. These books have been interesting to me over the years and I hope that the pieces I create will help illuminate some of the best text from the written word.
Being a teacher I use the knowledge I have gained both in my professional life and through furthering my own education. I’ve worked to make sure students have a voice in my classroom and to foster healthy discussions about art and how we see art in the world and in our lives. I am a member of National Art Educators Association and locally in Kentucky Art Education Association. I bring in guest speakers in the art field to speak with my students as I see the exploration helps keeps them motivated.
My photography work has been printed commercially in USA Today for The Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Pizza Today (as the art director and traveling photographer of all things pizza), and Louisville Business First (as editorial designer). I owned a photography gig for many years which specialized in weddings, portraits and commercial work. Within that work, I learned business skills, how to work with a variety of people and event planning.
Art retreats for female artists help revive my soul and work on thriving art projects. I plan to always lead and go on art retreats to help other artists achieve their goals by getting away and hash out ideas.
I collect antique books, stuff that should be recycled, reusable surfaces (windows, wood, canvases and frames) and funky pieces of art and furniture. I live with my husband, kids and a fun dog in the heart of Louisville, KY.
